New Jersey
Reasons for founding: In 1664, James, the Duke of York, received control of New Netherland. He granted land to two of his friends, Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, that would become New Jersey. The two advertised and promised settlers many benefits for colonizing including representative government and freedom of religion.
Date of Founding: 1664
Economy: Ship building and trading
Geography: Very rocky, but had rich soil. It northern border was the Hudson river, and its western was the Delaware river. Its eastern border is the Atlantic Ocean.
Government: Representative government.
Celebrities/Important Residents: Sir George Carteret, and John Lord Berkely.
Religion: Catholic and Protestant religions. (Had religious freedom)
Residency Requirements: That you did not persecute or disrespect others’ religion.
Target Residents: People who wanted religious freedom
